“I really love working with cars—I spend every Saturday at my uncle’s service workshop. I want to keep my options open while I’m doing things I really like. At present, I’m enrolled in a Pilot School Apprenticeship Link Program through the VET version of Automotive Engineering & Technology, which means I’m at school three days a week, one day at a Registered Training Organisation and one day at work. My program gives me a good chance of being offered an apprenticeship or traineeship in light vehicle, heavy vehicle, automotive, electrical or a number of other automotive qualifications. I’ll be able to choose what I like best.”

“I don’t really know what I want to do when I leave school- after all I am only 15 years old. The truth is even though I am quite bright (I am in the Gifted and Talented class at school) I haven’t really enjoyed school up to now. I have chosen a course that will leave my options open in that I will study four courses in depth and follow those things I am interested in i.e. computers, sport and drama. As well, I get to work in the real world and apply the skills I learn at school. Hopefully, I can stick it out while I work out what I want to do.”

“I don’t really know what I want to do when I leave school. My parents are small business owners and I think that’s what I’ll probably do, too. Maybe I’ll start by joining their business before I start my own. The courses I have selected will start me on the road to getting the skills for owning a small business as well as allowing me to do a broad education (and achieve the New WACE). By studying four courses in depth, I may achieve sufficiently high levels to achieve a competitive TER if I end up wanting to study business at university.”

“After I did work experience in Year 10 in a medical research lab, I was finally sure that I wanted to do medicine or work in scientific research. I’m doing six courses of study that I think are really relevant to medicine. I’m also doing French and Drama because they’re interests of mine and I really love them.
I am a national gymnast and wanted to participate in the world championships. My parents said I could as long as it didn’t interfere with my chances of entering university. I’ll complete the following program over three years.”

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a doctor. I’ve always done pretty well at school and really enjoy learning. I’m pretty involved in school life and am a prefect and the vice-captain of the school athletics team. I also play a lot of cricket and last year was selected to represent the State. I enjoy maths and science and also literature and politics. I really love being able to continue to fully participate in sport.”

“I’ve never been very good at school. If I could leave I would, but now the school leaving age has been raised. I have to keep going to school at least for part of the week. Luckily, I go to a school near a TAFE college, so I can go to TAFE as well as school. I really like working with my hands and so I am going to try for certificates in the metal area. I want to start to get some qualifications towards being a boilermaker. Also, I can work as well. Who knows? With the shortage in skilled workers I might even get an apprenticeship or a traineeship!”

I am quite strong in the humanities and OK in maths and science. The courses I’m doing will allow me to get into a range of university degrees in humanities or science areas, or to study information technology at TAFE. I’m doing Applied Information Technology because you can use it later in whatever you do.”

“Sport! Too much is never enough! I’ve been doing special hockey since Year 8. My weekends are taken up with playing and coaching an under-11 team — I really enjoy seeing them get better every week. I’ve done a coaching certificate and it will be counted towards my WACE. I would like to eventually work in the sport and recreation area, possibly by doing a TAFEWA diploma to train as a gym instructor or personal trainer. After the school counsellor saw my Year 11 report she said I could aim for a recreation course at university so I might sit the external exams at the end of Year 12 to get a TER. The VET version of Physical Education Studies course will allow me to work towards achieving a Certificate II in Sport (Career-oriented participation) by the end of Yr 12 as well. That way I have all my options covered!”

“I go to a district high school in the country. There are only eight of us doing Year11 but I don’t want to have to travel a long way to go to a bigger school. At my school I am able to attend classes three days and for the other two days I do structured workplace learning. My friend Emma does English and Maths at our school and three other courses through SIDE ( School of Isolated and Distance Education). It is really good because I can do something I really want to do, keep getting an education and stay at home.”

“I want to work in the hospitality industry because I love people and food. I wanted a course that allowed me to gain workplace experience and help me get a job or into TAFE at the end of Year 12, so I signed up for a School-based Traineeship. I attend normal classes at school 3 days a week, and do paid work 2 days a week at a lunch bar/coffee shop. At school I do English, Maths, Food Science and Technology, Career and Enterprise and Dance – just because I am good at it! I am doing Certificate II in Hospitality as a VET Stand-alone. My school doesn’t have the resources to offer the qualification on its own, but has worked out an arrangement with the local TAFE who deliver the training. I get assessed in the workplace. Once a month I work in a hospital kitchen preparing meals for the elderly. I started doing this in Year 10 through Work Experience, but have continued to be rostered on to help because I get a kick out of knowing my contribution is appreciated.”

“I have always found school to be a bit easy, which means I have lots of time for my involvement with WA Police Cadets. However, now the end of my secondary schooling is drawing near, I want to be sure I am able to get into a uni Economics or Commerce course. My school advertised an Economics unit being offered online through one of the universities, so I enrolled. It has been great enrichment for what we do at school, and I think is good preparation for what will be expected next year. I can’t wait to go to Uni!)
