When will the new courses be introduced?
The phased introduction of the new courses started in 2006. Endorsed programs became available this year.

The course syllabus is available to download from the respective course page on the Council’s WACE website (http://newwace.curriculum.wa.edu.au/pages/teachers_courses.asp). Examinations for new courses will not be offered until the second year of implementation.
Are students able to study the same course unit in different contexts?
Students will be able to undertake stage units in some courses with defined contexts and have the units count towards the 20 required for the WACE. These contextual units are not ‘repeat’ units. Although students can study different contexts in the one course, there will only be one examination for students in Year 12 for the stage 2 and one examination for the stage 3 units.
The following courses have defined course contexts. Units in those courses are studied in the defined contexts and are coded separately:
- History: ancient; modern (2009)
- Materials Design and Technology: wood; metal; textiles (2008)
- Design: photography, graphics; dimensional design (2009)
- Children, Family and the Community: living independently; caring for others (2009)
- Integrated Science: biotechnology, materials, space science; water (2009)
- Food Science and Technology: hospitality; product development; nutrition and health promotions (2009)
For 2008, can course grades in different contexts of the one course (such as wood and metal from Materials, Design and Technology) count towards the 10 subject equivalents, and can both count in the calculation of the C grade average?
Council units, completed in different contexts, can be counted as many times as they are completed. Repeat units can contribute towards the number of subject equivalents as well as the C grade average.
Can students do more than two units in a course in one calendar year?
Yes, if the school’s timetabling and resources enable students to select their units this way. However, students should be counselled to ensure the WACE requirements regarding course coverage and unit combinations are addressed.
Do repeat units count towards the WACE?
Yes, repeat units have the same status in terms of contribution to the WACE requirements. However, students should be counselled to ensure the WACE requirements regarding course coverage and unit combinations are addressed.
Do students have to do stage 2 before they do stage 3 units?
Not necessarily. However, in most cases students will study stage 2 before stage 3.
Do students who have not met requirements in Semester 1 have to re-enrol in the same unit in Semester 2?
No. If it is in accordance with the school’s assessment policy, schools may provide additional work and assessment for these students and then submit a revised result by the end of November.
If a student started in Literature and switched to English mid-year, would the student receive a credit towards the four units required to graduate?
Yes. The semester in Literature could count as one semester of English. The school would make necessary arrangements in acknowledging the Literature achievement as satisfying the English course requirements.
What are the implications of the text lists for English and Literature?
Students will need to refer to the texts on the text lists as primary references in examinations.
From 2008 text lists indicate the range and variety of texts from which teachers can choose to meet the requirements of particular units.
How were the text lists for English course developed?
Current text lists will be reviewed through Council collaborative processes. They will be derived from current recommended text lists to ensure that schools have the resources for the course.
