Community Service Program
The community service program supports a government commitment to help students understand the importance of contemporary community values and to ensure young people understand their rights and responsibilities as active members of society. The program will commence with Year 10 students in 2007 and will be a requirement of the WACE from 2009.
The Curriculum Council, in collaboration with the Department of Education and Training, Association of Independent Schools of WA and Catholic Education Office, have developed a set of guidelines and a log book for recording the hours of service completed.
Guidelines
The community service program guidelines will form part of the new WACE manual, but are available immediately by clicking here.
Service Record
A log book for recording service hours has been developed and is in the process of being produced. Schools will be contacted early in 2007 to determine the number required, and the log books distributed accordingly. There will be no cost for the log books. The log book can be seen by clicking here.
Click here for a log book order form. (Order forms must be returned by the end of February 2007.)
Alternatively, schools may choose to develop their own service record or incorporate the essential information into an existing booklet. The information required for Curriculum Council audit purposes can be accessed in word format by clicking here.
Exemptions
In rare circumstances a student may be unable to complete the community service requirement for the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). To find out about the exemptions process click here.
